Learn about the healing power of A.R.T. from our Irvine Chiropractors
Active Release Technique, commonly known as ART, is a highly-skilled therapy which has been developed to treat the problems with the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. Basically, ART treats problems associated with overused muscles. Overused muscles can be the result of pulls, tears, collisions, or a lack of oxygen reaching the muscles. Overused muscles can also be the result of small injuries which accumulate small tears in the muscles over time (micro-trauma). In all these cases, scar tissue may start building up, causing a host of problems; muscles become shorter and weaker, nerves can become trapped and tendons may tense up causing tendinitis. These conditions cause reduced range of motion, loss of muscular strength, and pain. For those experiencing a trapped nerve, your symptoms may also include tingling (pins and needles), numbness, and feelings of weakness when using certain muscle groups.
ART was originally developed by a chiropractor who had a background in both aeronautical engineering and anatomy. ART was first released to the public in 1991 under a different name, “myofascial release.” In 1995, the name “Active Release Technique” was patented to describe this new therapy which is extremely specific and deals with more than just muscle and fascia. Throughout the years, word has spread that ART is an extremely effective soft tissue management system. Many individuals, groups, professional athletic teams, and business entities have come to rely on ART care. Corporations such as electronics manufacturer Sanmina-SCI has seen a greater than 80% reduction of injuries in the past four years after they started using ART certified practitioners to help maintain the health of their workforce.
In order for a chiropractor to become certified to practice ART, they must spend approximately two years preparing. The ART certification process involves hundreds of hours of training and practicing before they have passed all the requirements. In addition to their initial training, all ART providers must attend annual seminars to maintain their credential status and learn about any new protocols and research.

We commonly see patients from Irvine, as well as Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, and the surrounding areas that are experiencing headaches, pain, numbness, and weakness. Many of these patients are able to achieve amazing results with the use of ART, along with the use of chiropractic care, massage therapy, and physical therapy.

ART Works Well With Chiropractic Care, Massage Therapy, and Physical Therapy
During your initial visit and consultation, one of our chiropractors
will provide you with a full examination of your current condition and
health history. After determining the cause of your symptoms, our
chiropractor will talk to you about what may have originally caused your
pain symptoms, and may prescribe specific exercises or stretches to
prevent the condition from returning. The chiropractor will then provide
you with the ART treatment, which is focused on correcting the
tightness and scar tissue that has been found in your soft tissue.
After the first ART treatment, many of our patients are surprised to experience an increased range of motion, increased strength, and decreased numbness or tingling. After only one or two ART treatments, most of our patients experience a reduction in pain or even the total elimination of their pain symptoms. What is so exciting is that ART is not a temporary solution, it actually offers permanent results!
When patients follow all recommendations by our chiropractors following their ART treatments, including additional stretches and corrective exercises, the chances of their condition or pain returning are very low. In fact, during clinical studies of ART, the re-occurrence of conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome after ART therapy was only 4%, and half of that small percentage of patients didn’t follow the prescribed exercises and stretches. The bottom line is, ART works and can help you achieve a permanent reduction in your pain and other symptoms.
ART is a specific therapy that has been developed to resolve these issues and bring a patient’s body back to normal functioning. Several other effective therapies are based upon the same basic principles of treating a patient’s soft tissue problems; including massage therapy, trigger point therapy, electrical modalities, and ultrasound. However, ART is completely different from these other therapies as it is very specific and targets only the parts of the soft tissue that are causing a problem. As opposed to being a generalized soft tissue therapy like massage therapy, ART actually a patented soft tissue management and correction system. Though ART is different from other therapies like chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, and physical therapy, ART works wonderfully when combined with these other techniques as part of a complete and customized program by an experienced chiropractor.
